Striking in appearance and intensely aromatic, star anise brings a deep, sweet aniseed warmth to both sweet and savoury dishes. A key ingredient in Chinese 5 spice and Vietnamese pho, it's equally at home in mulled wine, spiced syrups, and slow-braised dishes. Use whole for infusing or grind for a more intense hit.
