Create an abstract mini quilt using repurposed fabrics!

We’re pleased to welcome Rebekah Johnston to Shop Zero! Join us to make your own mini quilt by repurposing waste fabrics.

Level: Suitable for beginners and those with previous sewing experience.

During this abstract mini quilt workshop with Rebekah Handmade, you will go through a creative approach to placement, shape, colour, and stitch to create a balanced composition. We will learn about the sustainable benefits of using linen and look at ways of repurposing your own waste fabrics at home. This is a great opportunity to use those fabric scraps you’ve been saving for instance!

Workshop breakdown

You will begin by looking at a selection of quilt work and visual inspiration to help you start thinking creatively about your abstract quilt composition.

Rebekah will then teach you how to use a range of hand applique techniques. This is to create a unique composition that you will then hand quilt and bind to turn it into a wall hanging or place mat.

Finally, you will build up texture using a range of hand embroidery techniques.

And there you go! You will leave with a completed piece plus all of the skills and knowledge to make your own quilt at home.

This abstract mini quilt workshop covers the following techniques:

  • Textile collage and composition
  • Simple hand applique techniques
  • Hand embroidery skills
  • Hand quilting
  • Constructing and binding your quilted piece ready for display.

Materials: Your quilted wall hanging will measure approximately 30cm x 30cm. We will supply you with deadstock linen fabrics for the top and backing, wadding, scrap fabrics and also threads. Please feel free to bring along any special fabrics and/or threads you have at home to make this piece more personal to you. Moreover, this is a great use to repurpose your waste, pre-loved clothing fabrics.
